Social Security Advocacy Project (SSAP) represents people with limited income and disabilities in their Social Security cases. Approximately 2/3 of SSAP cases are initial claims for Social Security disability benefits. These benefits are notoriously difficult to obtain with delays of over a year being the norm. These cases generate a contingency fee for the representative from the client's retroactive award. This source of funding has allowed the Project to spend the remaining 1/3 of its resources assisting clients who face incorrect terminations of their benefits, charges of overpayments which could result in reductions of their benefits, and other alleged violations of extremely complicated and technical rules, at no cost.
By doing this work, SSAP has substantially increased the availability of legal assistance for these cases and simultaneously generated unrestricted funding to support the development of SCLC's projects.
