The Seattle Community Law Center’s mission is to provide accessible legal advocacy to people with physical and mental disabilities so that they may obtain the resources necessary to overcome barriers and gain financial and medical stability. |

Co-founded in 1997 by long-time legal aid attorneys Tha Win and Denise Read, SCLC provides advice and assistance to low-income individuals with disabilities in matters related to their entitlement to Social Security disability and SSI benefits, as well as with related State cash and medical benefits. Co-founder Tha Win, was instrumental in passing state legislation requiring the Department of Social and Health Services to proactively screen benefits applicants for hidden disabilities and barriers that could limit their access to benefits, and to provide appropriate accommodations to improve access. SCLC furthers it mission through the development of targeted advocacy projects that address the unique barriers faced by vulnerable populations in the Seattle region who have historically had difficulty accessing government benefits to which they are entitled. SCLC provides legal advice, advocacy and direct legal representation to our clients. By providing the necessary accommodations and supports to help clients remain engaged in the benefits application and appeals process, SCLC helps disabled individuals living in deep poverty gain a measure of income stability: the first critical step toward stability in housing and medical treatment, and perhaps toward recovery. |
