Organizational Background
The Seattle Community Law Center (SCLC) is a 501(C)(3) tax exempt, non-profit organization that was founded in 1997 by two legal aid attorneys with over twenty years of advocacy experience in King County. SCLC's primary constituency is residents in King County living in poverty. Within this population, SCLC seeks to work with people who further face barriers to access including immigrants, people with disabilities, people of color and other members of disadvantaged groups.

We believe that advocacy to address our constituents' short term problems must be accompanied by advocacy for long term changes to prevent the perpetuation of these problems. As such, we pursue two necessary and complementary activities. The Seattle Community Law Center (SCLC) provides accessible direct legal assistance and representation to people of limited means with a focus on people who face barriers and are isolated. The SCLC also seeks to work collaboratively with its targeted communities to empower their members to advocate for themselves and their neighborhoods.
US Supreme Court
The SCLC's strategy for achieving its mission is based upon the development and implementation of project-based advocacy that is carefully targeted and tailored to address advocacy needs unmet by the few existing legal services organizations. Our primary objections are to target underserved client communities with strategies designed to meaningfully improve access to vital advocacy assistance in matters that threaten the stability, safety, and health of vulnerable individuals and families, and build lasting community capacity to advocate for long-term change. SCLC is currently comprised of three existing projects, the Social Security Advocacy Project, the Access Law Project, and the Community Law Advocate Worker (LAW) Project.
